About

part and parcel (noun): an essential or integral component

In spring 2022, a posse of hyperactive urban minds gathered outside City Hall in Philadelphia. The casual meeting, lubricated by pizza and IPAs, became an electric discussion of how volunteers, freelancers, and data analysts can join forces to reimagine the access our body politic has to consequential, yet oddly-timed, public forums.

Forums such as the Zoning Board of Adjustment. The ZBA is one of many public theaters, where many of us, who live without access to cars, have seen, tucked into minute 103 of minute 180, transit-oriented developments planned for vacant industrial lots falter.

Many of us don't know why or how we get what we see in Philadelphia:

  • Bygone industrial lots adjacent to transit and jobs fail to transform into houses for neighbors and spaces for entrepreneurs.
  • One notoriously dangerous road after another is repaved with the promise of being at least just as hazardous as the former - for 20 more years.
  • Downtown growth is appearing increasingly contemptuous because of its juxtaposition to overlooked neighborhoods.

In a representative democracy, understanding public meetings is part and parcel (an essential and integral component) of shaping the built environment we inhabit as humans - for the better or for the worst.
